Basketball Nets Pose Snowplow Hazard

Dont Lose Your Hoop 12.6.2024As winter approaches, we ask all residents to move basketball nets and hoops off the road and away from the curb line. This simple step ensures that snowplows can safely and effectively clear the streets without obstacles.

Why Is This Necessary?
When reviewing our plowing routes, we noticed  basketball hoops protruding into the streets, creating  issues for plow trucks:

  • Damage to Equipment: Hoops are at or near the same height as passenger-side mirrors. Broken mirrors delay snow removal and cost the Borough valuable time and money.
  • Safety Hazards: Mirrors are critical for safe plowing. Damaged or missing mirrors can lead to delays and unsafe conditions for plow operators and other drivers.
  • Reduced Clearing Efficiency: To avoid damage, plows stay further away from the curb, leaving snow and ice behind.
  • Risk of Hoop Damage: Hoops left in the right-of-way have higher potential to be damaged during plowing operations.

What You Can Do:

  • Move Hoops Away: Even if the base is on the side of the road, the hoop itself often extends into the street. Pull hoops well onto your property away from the roadway.
  • Best Practice: Store the hoop in your driveway or garage for the winter to keep it safe and out of the way.

Our plow crews work tirelessly during storm season to ensure roads are clear and safe for everyone. By moving your basketball net, you’re helping us do our job efficiently while protecting your property, and making roadways safer for all who travel them.  We look forward to working together to make this winter safer and easier for everyone.
