Electric Rate Increase: By The Numbers

(November 20, 2025) Any and all increases in costs are felt by Lansdale consumers, and that’s why we want to explain what’s behind the upcoming 15% electric rate increases for next year. In 2026, the cost for both electricity power and capacity are going up.  These increases are primarily based upon the fees utilities pay to assure sufficient electricity is available during peak times.  To keep up with these rising wholesale costs and continue providing reliable service, the Borough must make changes.  Simply put, we can’t keep the system running strong without adjusting our electric rates consistent with increased prices.

In 2026, it’s going to cost about $2.9 million more to deliver power to Lansdale than it did in 2025.  That jump mainly comes from the PJM capacity market, limited new generation coming online, and increasing demand on the system.  The Borough is also planning to transfer $7.5 million from the Electric Fund to help support other departments like Police, Administration, Public Works and Parks and Recreation.  Doing this allows us to keep Lansdale’s tax millage among the lowest in the area.  On top of that, the Electric Department needs to keep a $4 million cash reserve each year so we’re prepared for any unexpected infrastructure emergencies.  The electric market remains highly volatile nationwide and communities across the country are seeing rates go up.

But what does all that mean for Lansdale Electric Customers?  The impact will see the average monthly residential electric bill will go up $28.10.  Even with a 15% increase in rates, the Borough still provides better value than neighboring electric companies, where rates are adjusted more frequently.  The proposed increase ensures we continue meeting high standards for residents and businesses.  Reliability is one of the main benefits of our local electric system, and this rate adjustment ensures that will continue.

Electric rates do more than cover the cost of electricity, they help fund essential Borough services, from parks to police and beyond.  This support keeps Lansdale vibrant, safe and welcoming for everyone. While rates are increasing, these investments are critical to maintaining the quality of life we all value, both now and for the future.
